Current forms of transnational migration have considerably shaped European societies. Media and state reactions, as well as the increased hostility and xenophobia among segments of the population, have received wide scholarly attention. Different forms of institutional, collective or individual acts of refugee protection, care and solidarity and their influence on larger social and political processes have only recently become a focus of analysis. Berliner Institut für Migrationsforschung (BIM) and Humboldt University in general as well as the Minority Research Institute at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MRI-HAS) are pioneering in this field of study. (Concerning the latter see two current articles:…)

In the light of similar previous research interests and results at the two institutes the main objective of the current research is to contribute to the comparative understanding of the inter-European migratory trends and to the identification of particular practices, attitudes and motivations of inter-European migrants (Hungarians and Poles in Germany) towards new migration waves coming from outside Europe.

In practical terms the aims of the current research and of the collaboration of MRI-HAS and BIM are:

  1. comparative analysis of the online survey data on Hungarian and Polish migrants living in Germany first of all their attitudes towards non-European migrants
  2. comparative analysis of qualitative data on volunteers in Germany and Hungary
  3. development of the analytical and methodological tools for comparative analysis of transnational processes and civic responsibilities.

A comparable quantitative data set has been produced on Poles and Hungarians living in Germany, as well as a subsample on volunteers and employees in the field of refugee protection and integration. A first set of 16 interviews have been conducted. The comparative analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data will be the aim of our collaboration in the nearest future, which will create the basis for further research collaboration.

In different EU countries two major forms of public discourses are formulated around the topic of migration from the Middle East: securitization interprets migration as a phenomenon destabilizing the social cohesion and integration of a society, criminalizing Middle Eastern migrants; while the discourse of humanitarianism and human rights frames refugees as victims, as legitimate claimants of material and symbolic support on the part of receiving societies. To what extent are personal migration experience of Hungarian migrants in Germany and their struggles for social status, its successes and failures related to reactions to the arrival of refugee groups? How is responsiveness to these two major discourses related to the social status of Hungarian migrants and their personal migration experience? How is the dual positionality of these migrants, being exposed to publics of multiple societies (Hungary and Germany) reflected in their attitudes towards refugees arriving from  Middle Eastern conflict zones , and towards securitization and humanitarianism? These questions are analysed based on a quantitative online survey conducted through the biggest facebook groupsof Hungarians living in Germanyin a final sample of 642 respondents and 16 interviews conducted in Berlin and München among Hungarians involved in refugeeprotection and  integration. (See: Research Report on Hungarian Migrants in Germany and Conference Lecture entitled Migrant solidarity?
