Az előadás címe: The hidden costs of Educational Upward Mobility Among First-in-Family Roma and Non-Roma Graduates in Hungary

Absztrakt:

In our talk we highlight the ’cruelties of mobility’ through the findings of a 4-year research project that examined the different trajectories, outcomes, and hidden costs of educational upward mobility among first-in-family (FIF) majority and racilised minority students in Hungary. The study explores the benefits and costs of the upward mobility process and how changing class affects the social, familial, and personal relations of the upwardly mobile Roma and non-Roma graduates. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, including 175 narrative interviews, and an ethnographic observation, to examine the mobility experiences of first-in-family graduates. The presentation will also investigate whether talent support programs can compensate for structural educational inequality and mitigate the challenges faced by upwardly mobile racialised minority students in Hungary who come from socio-economically disadvantaged families.
